International research has generated strong evidence that physicians can play an important role in the return-to-work (RTW) process. This research also suggests that physicians may struggle managing return-to-work consultations. Time requirements, administrative challenges and limited knowledge about a patient’s workplace can thwart active engagement.
The Institute for Work & Health (IWH) has launched a two-year study focusing on the experience of physicians within the workers’ compensation system and their role in the RTW process. The research team is currently interviewing physicians and workers' compensation case managers to learn more about the role of physicians in RTW after injury or illness.
