Visual-Digital Communications Associate (full-time, permanent)

The Institute for Work & Health (IWH) is an independent, not-for-profit research organization. Our mission is to promote, protect and improve the safety and health of working people by conducting actionable research that is valued by employers, workers and policy-makers.

IWH is currently seeking a qualified person to fill the permanent, full-time position of Visual/Digital Communications Associate.

About the position

Reporting to the Senior Communications Associate and working closely with the Web & Design Coordinator, the Visual/Digital Communications Associate is a key member of the Institute’s Communications and KTE (Knowledge Transfer & Exchange) Teams. They bring expertise in creating a range of multi-media products (e.g. videos, infographics, e-newsletters, social media cards, slidecasts and more)—all with a commitment to engaging our lay audiences and making our research findings accessible to them.

Core duties and responsibilities

  • Working collaboratively with scientists and other members of the Communications and KTE Teams, develop a range of accessible multimedia products, including videos, infographics, animations, data visualizations, e-newsletters, social media cards and more
  • Share these products across various channels, including social media (Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube), websites, email, mobile devices, and in-person events
  • Plan and produce videos from outset to completion, including creating storyboards, shooting footage, creating graphics and animations, selecting photos, editing and sound mixing, and branding
  • Create infographics, including determining key messages, writing content and designing pdf and online versions
  • Create content for, design and produce social media graphics, web-based charts and other data visualizations
  • Prepare and disseminate e-newsletters, including biweekly staff newsletter and monthly newsletter to external audiences
  • Support Institute’s monthly webinars (IWH Speaker Series), including creating and posting slidecasts
  • Support Web & Design Coordinator with the design of signage, exhibit/conference materials, lay-friendly resources, corporate and scientific reports, scientific posters and more, as needed
  • Take photographs, as needed
  • Watch trends and look for new opportunities to visually communicate IWH messages and research findings that effectively reach our diverse stakeholder audiences, both current and new

Education, experience and skills

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in media, communications or other relevant specialty
  • Three-plus years of experience in a visual communications role, particularly in video production, animation, graphic design, data visualization and content creation (i.e. developing and writing key messages)
  • Excellent writing skills, with a knack for understanding and synthesizing complex information and turning it into lay-friendly language (sound understanding of research methods and/or work-related issues considered an asset)
  • Knowledge of video production and editing software (e,g, Shotcut, Adobe Premier Pro); graphic design software (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, PhotoShop); and Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint)
  • Strong knowledge of accessibility requirements across types of media
  • Experience in a research or academic environment, or in an organization working in the field of work and health, an asset
  • Ability to work both collaboratively within a team and independently
  • A passion for sharing high-quality research to improve the health of workers

Salary range

Salary will depend on qualifications and experience and will be in the range of $60,000 to $70,000, plus group benefits, four weeks’ annual vacation, and enrolment in a leading defined-benefit pension plan. Suitability for the position will be assessed at six months.
