Amie Richards
Amie Richards joined the Institute in March 2023. She is a research associate working with Dr. Emile Tompa on Inclusive Design for Employment Access (IDEA)’s Hub 1, accessibility planning and reporting. She is currently a PhD student at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She holds a master’s degree in sociology; an honours bachelor of arts with a double major in law and society and sociology; a diploma in police studies; a certificate in criminology; and a paralegal diploma.
During her studies, she was awarded the Canadian Tire Scholarship in Sociology; the Cpl. Michael J. Roberts Memorial Award in Police Studies; the Lt. Donald O’Neill Memorial Award in Police Studies; the Women’s Association of Memorial University Single Parent Undergraduate Award; the Cox and Palmer Prize in Law and Society; and received the distinction of Dean’s List in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Amie’s research areas focus on qualitative research related to lived experience, loss and grief, emotional trauma, disability, and using research to extend the public’s understanding of an issue, and to drive positive change in those areas. Amie is an older student with neurodiversity and a hidden disability. She has four children, each of whom has diverse disabilities and levels of functioning. Her experiences provide a unique perspective that she brings to her education, research, and work.
