Safer work practices, lower injury rates maintained two years after Ontario’s working-at-heights training came into effect: study

In 2015, the Ontario government implemented a working-at-heights (WAH) training standard to ramp up fall prevention efforts. An IWH study team has now gathered two additional years of data on the effectiveness of this training requirement—both on work practices and injury rates.

What research can do: IWH study on working at heights training well-received

An IWH study on the effectiveness of Ontario's mandatory fall prevention training was valuable to the province’s labour ministry in several ways. It confirmed training effectiveness and informed updates to the requirements. It also reinforced the value of program evaluation at the system level.

A new series in The Lancet, with IWH scientists among the co-authors, highlights the impacts that working conditions can have on health outcomes across the population. It argues that work is not used to its full potential as a means to address health inequities.

New data viz tool highlights patterns of opioid harms among Ontario workers

A new, interactive tool has just been launched to illustrate patterns of opioid-related harms in a large group of Ontario workers. Members of the public can view data on harms by occupation and industry, and by demographic factors like age, sex and and geographic region.

Employer versions of job accommodation tool help organizations think about worker needs

Two new editions of the Job Demands and Accommodation Planning Tool have been launched. They’re designed to give employers ideas—tailored to an individual worker or a job—on ways to support people who have difficulties with their job demands due to their health conditions.

Dr. Katherine Zagrodney is the inaugural recipient of the Cameron Mustard Early Career Accelerator Award. With the award, she aims to to explore the health outcomes of homecare workers across sociodemographic and work-related factors.
