The Institute for Work & Health (IWH) is pleased to announce the 2024/2025 S. Leonard Syme Research Training Award recipients. They are: Elsie Obeng-Kingsley, Ainsley Miller and Andrea Baumann. The Syme awards were established in 2002 to recognize Dr. S. Leonard Syme's contributions to IWH as chair of its Scientific Advisory Committee from 1995 to 2002. The awards are intended to support early-career researchers at the master's or doctoral level intending to study work and health.
Elsie Obeng-Kingsley is a PhD candidate in social and behavioural health sciences at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health. Her thesis is titled, “Misogynoir as a determinant of occupational health for Black women social workers.” Ainsley Miller is a PhD candidate in health sciences at Lakehead University. Her thesis is “Evaluating burnout and mental health among nurses in Northwestern Ontario.” The third recipient, Andrea Baumann is a PhD candidate from the University of Toronto’s Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing. Her thesis is titled “Structural violence in a gendered workforce: a grounded theory examination of nursing workplace safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
During the 12-month award term, the fellows will be invited to join IWH’s early career training group, and to participate in other aspects of academic life at the Institute like the IWH Speaker Series.
Congratulations to the new Syme fellows!
