Dr. Maurits van Tulder

Dr. Maurits van Tulder is head of the Department of Health Sciences and director of the Master Program in Health Sciences in the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences at Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He is also the director of musculoskeletal health research at the EMGO+ Institute for Health and Care Research and deputy editor of the European Spine Journal.
For 10 years, from 2007 to 2017, van Tulder was a coordinating editor of Cochrane Back and Neck (formerly known as the Cochrane Back Review Group), housed at the Institute for Work & Health. He has chaired or been a committee member for at least five low-back pain clinical guidelines. He is frequently invited to speak at scientific conferences and is a member of the organizing committees of the Low Back Pain Forum for Research in Primary Care and the World Congress of Low Back and Pelvic Pain, the two leading conferences in the field of back pain.
Van Tulder has an MSc in human movement sciences and a PhD in epidemiology from the EMGO Institute. His main research interests are musculoskeletal disorders in primary and occupational care, with a methodological focus on systematic reviews and economic evaluation. He has published more than 340 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals.
