Workplace violence is getting increasing attention, especially within certain industries such as health care and education. This presentation will discuss results from two recently completed studies examining differences in the risk of workplace violence for men and women. The first study examines the relative contribution of work-related factors to differences in the risk of different types of violence for men and women using self-reports of violence from Statistics Canada’s General Social Survey on Victimization. The second study examines trends in workplace violence for men and women in different industries in Ontario using workers’ compensation data in Ontario. The presentation will conclude by discussing current gaps in surveillance and monitoring workplace violence, which need to be addressed in order to evaluate primary prevention activities in this area.
